Kitty Fadlu-Deen

Biography of Kitty Fadlu-Deen

As the wife of Alhaji Dr. A. T. Fadlu-Deen, Dr. Kitty Fadlu-Deen has made Sierra Leone her home since 1970.  A music graduate of the National University of Ireland and the University of York, she co-founded the Ballanta Academy of Music in Freetown in 1995. Before that she was in teacher training in both Women Teachers College and Milton Margai Teachers College. Her appointment as one of the Commissioners of the Monuments and Relics Commission gave her the opportunity to learn more about the rich cultural assets of Sierra Leone and be even more determined to impress on the people of Sierra Leone that they must take immediate responsibility for these cultural treasures.
"Dr. Kitty Fadlu-Deen ?rst gave us Milo and all that Jazz which provided, with potted biographies, information on Sierra Leone's rich heritage of popular musicians of the Twentieth Century. In Musical Instruments and Spirit Masks, she describes the traditional drums and musical instruments of Sierra Leone and their functions in society, with particular reference to the masqueraders with which they are associated. It is a book packed with information presented in a style that would appeal to general readers of all ages, but it is aimed particularly at the youth of Sierra Leone as the use of some of these instruments is fast being overtaken by modernity. Highly recommended."
